THE CONTEST:

Menopause: The Musical has broken the taboo of discussing "the change" women go through.  It has even spawned a women's movement!  Theatre sure can be powerful!  According to the show, there are several symptoms of "the change".  Below are several questions about those symptoms as they might apply to some famous ladies in theatre history.  Good luck and have fun!  NOTE: The photos below represent some of the answer choices.  They may or may not be clues to the correct answers.

1.  This famous cat, played on Broadway by Betty Buckley (among others), didn't suffer from "Memory" loss!  She sang it 7485 times at the Winter Garden Theatre, in fact.  She is:

a.  Jennyanydots

b.  Bombalurina

c.  Grizabella

d.  Victoria

e.  Rumpleteaser

2.  Tevye's wife, Golde sure had trouble sleeping in Fiddler on the Roof, though her sleepless nights weren't likely due to menopause.  What caused her to toss and turn?

a.  Tevye was frisky

b.  The threat of an attack by the Russians in Anatevka

c.  Her five daughters wouldn't stop singing about a visit from Yente, the matchmaker.

d.  Worry over where their next meal is coming from

e.  A visit from beyond the grave from her grandmother and others

3.  Another "lady of a certain age" also suffered from sleepless nights at her Scottish castle.  Lady Macbeth was plagued by:

a.  Imagined blood that wouldn't wash from her hands

b.  Guards that talked too much

c.  Birnam wood moving to Dunsinane

d.  Dreams of the three weird sisters

e.  A candle that won't go out

4.  Night feeding might explain the "indeterminate girth" of this Baltimore hon from Hairspray.  Of course, it doesn't help that she rides an Esskay hot dog cart in the streets…  She is:

a.  Penny Pingleton

b.  Prudy Pingleton

c.  Edna Turnblad

d.  Tracy Turnblad

e.  Velma Van Tussel

5.  Odd cravings might plague this purveyor of meat pies, played on Broadway by Angela Lansbury, and most recently, Patti LuPone.  She is:

a.  Reno Sweeney

b. Nellie Lovett

c. Mame Dennis

d. Eva Peron

e. Mama Rose

6.  Talk about your mood swings!  Sister muses Melpomene and Caliope are two "Evil Women" in this musical based on a film currently playing on Broadway.  It is:

a.  Hairspray      b.  Grey Gardens     c.  Legally Blonde    d.  Xanadu      e.  Spamalot

7.  Elaine Stritch, Debra Monk and Barbara Walsh all played Joanne in different Broadway productions of this Tony-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim.  This heavy drinking woman surely had bladder issues!  That show is:

a.  Frogs     b.  Company     c.  Follies     d.  Passion     e.  Bounce

8.  Bitchy mood swings are a famous part of "Bosom Buddies" from Mame.  In the original Broadway cast, Angela Lansbury played Mame.  Who played her "bosom buddy" Vera Charles, "somewhere between 40 and death"?

a.  Bea Arthur

b.  Estelle Getty

c.  Rue McClanahan

d.  Betty White

e.  Lucille Ball

9.  This real life character, jailed for the attempted assassination of Gerald Ford, suffered from both mood swings and paranoia.  She is:

a.  Little Edie from Grey Gardens

b.  Celie from The Color Purple

c.  Roxy Hart from Chicago

d.  Sara Jane Moore from Assassins

e.  Janet Van De Graaff from The Drowsy Chaperone

10.  Each of these older women showed their insatiable sex drive by pursuing younger men, EXCEPT:

a.  Lola going after Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees

b.  Elizaveta Grushinskaya going after the Baron in Grand Hotel: The Musical

c.  Mrs. Robinson going after Benjamin in The Graduate

d.  Norma Desmond going after Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard

e.  Mama Morton going after Billy Flynn in Chicago

Don't forget!  All entries must include the LETTER and the ANSWER for each question.  All entries must be received by noon, Wednesday August 1st.

James was first bitten by the theatre bug at the tender young age of 11, when, at the last minute, he was called upon to replace a classmate who, 42nd STREET-like, broke his leg, in a play, of all things, about the skeletal system! It was a trip to New York with his high school drama teacher to see Angela Lansbury in MAME that sealed his fate. As an actor, favorite roles include Sheridan Whiteside in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, Potiphar in JOSEPH..., Col. Pickering in MY FAIR LADY, and Sancho Panza?s ass in MAN OF LA MANCHA. After spending a summer feeling very conflicted playing both an apostle AND a high priest in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, James' theatre career took a turn toward direction and design, including such varied productions as THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, LOST IN YONKERS, GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER and GRAND HOTEL, SIDE SHOW, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and SWEENEY TODD. James holds a Bachelor's degree in English from Towson University, with additional course work in journalism, dramaturgy, scenic design and stage direction. He is living proof that you can be a devout Sondheim fan AND love MAMMA MIA!
