Chicago Human Rhythm Project Presents JUBA! Masters of Tap and Percussive Dance, 12/7

The Kennedy Center and Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP) celebrate the ever-evolving art of percussive dance with CHRP’s JUBA! Masters of Tap and Percussive Dance on December 7, 2012 at 8 p.m. in the Eisenhower Theater. Curated by CHRP Founder and Artistic Director Lane Alexander, this full-length tap concert will feature a host of extraordinary foot drummers and percussive arts masters from all over the country. The concert will include performances by CHRP's BAM!, Diane "Lady Di" Walker, Bessie Award-winner Sam Weber, Broadway stars Derick K. Grant and Dormeshia Sumbry Edwards, M.A.D.D. Rhythms and the Greg Spero Trio, Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, Michelle Dorrance and Dorrance Dance, Washington D.C.'s Step Afrika!, an excerpt from Rasta Thomas' new show Tap Stars featuring Jason Janas, members of six American youth tap ensembles, and alumni from the 80th Anniversary Jacob's Pillow Tap Program.

Percussive dance has historically grown and evolved within numerous cultures all over the world, spawning multiple styles of dance including tap, step-dancing, clogging, and flamenco, to name a few. Tap, the classic American form of percussive dance, originally fused African rhythmic and Irish dance traditions and has since been constantly reinvented as a contemporary, dynamic, and relevant art form. This performance celebrates American percussive dance with a program filled with innovative companies and artists that continue to push the boundaries of tap and percussive dance as a whole.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP) builds community through American tap and contemporary percussive arts in world class, innovative performance, education, and outreach programs. CHRP celebrates the primal impulse to make rhythm and presents programs throughout the year that bring diverse individuals and communities together to share this common experience. CHRP is America’s first year-round presenter of tap and contemporary rhythmic expression and is currently working with the State Department to bring tap dance to American Cultural Centers throughout China. CHRP’s resident performance and education ensemble BAM! performs its acclaimed lecture demonstration We All Got Rhythm, which has been seen by more than 60,000 school children during the last five years, throughout Chicago.
