Due to Forecasted Snow, Ford's Offers Tix Exchanges for Weekend Shows of THE RIVALRY

In anticipation of the forecasted snow, the Ford's Theatre Society offers patrons the option to exchange previously purchased tickets to this weekend's performances of The Rivalry (February 5, at 7:30 p.m.; February 6, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and February 7, at 2:30 p.m.) for performances later in the run.

Additionally, the theatre has added a performance of The Rivalry at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 14 to accommodate patrons. Those interested in exchanging should contact their point of purchase directly. All exchanges must be finalized prior to February 11.

Ticketmaster (online or by phone) buyers should call (202) 397-SEAT.
Ticketmaster outlets buyers (Macy's, et al) should return to the outlet.

Ford's Theatre buyers should contact (202) 347-4833. Patrons are encouraged to leave a message if they are unable to speak directly to a customer service representative.

Ford's Theatre has not yet canceled any of this weekend's performances. If the decision is made to cancel any performance, that information will be posted on the Ford's Theatre website at www.fords.org.

The Ford's Theatre 2009-2010 season continues with "The Rivalry" by Norman Corwin, January 22 to February 14, 2010.

Over the course of seven debates, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas tackled the hot topics of their day: state's rights, slavery and the intent of the Constitution. "The Rivalry" captures the fiery rhetoric and wry humor of those debates, while adding the insights of Douglas's wife, Adele. As Lincoln and Douglas race for the chance to be U.S. Senator, Adele reexamines her own concepts of freedom. Ford's Theatre Director of Theatre Programming Mark Ramont directs Robert Parsons as Abraham Lincoln, Helen Hayes Award winner Rick Foucheux as Stephen Douglas and Sarah Zimmerman ("The Matchmaker") as Adele. The New York Times calls the play "evocative... and stirring theatre."

"‘The Rivalry' is an incredibly inspiring story," said director Mark Ramont. "'Playwright Norman Corwin pulls most of his dialogue from the actual transcripts of the Lincoln-Douglas debate, so it's a very true story. The play speaks to the power of an idea - in this case liberty for all men - and its ability to propel a man of humble origins to the highest office in the land."

Media partner WAMU-FM provides promotional support throughout the run.

Ford's Theatre Society is pleased to acknowledge Lead Production Sponsor Exxon Mobil Corporation. "The Rivalry" also is sponsored in part by American Express, Altria Group, Inc., and the National Endowment for the Arts. Ford's Theatre's 2009-2010 season sponsors are The Home Depot and Chevron.

He is a three-time recipient of the Austin Critics Circle Award for Best Director and a three-time winner of the Austin Circle of Theatres award for Outstanding Direction. Ramont has served on the teaching staff and as Director of Theatre at Rice University; he is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at American University.
