NNPN Announces 34th Rolling World Premiere: SE LLAMA CRISTINA

The NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN), the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, announces its 34th Rolling World Premiere: Octavio Solis' Se Llama Cristina will receive three productions through the Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons. Se Llama Cristina will begin its Rolling World Premiere at Magic Theatre (San Francisco, CA, January 23 - February 17, 2013), followed by performances at Kitchen Dog Theater (Dallas, TX, May 24 - June 22, 2013) and The Theatre @ Boston Court (Pasadena, CA, January 16 - February 23, 2014).

ABOUT THE PLAY
A man and a woman wake up to find themselves trapped in a room with no memory of how they got there or who they are. As they push each other to piece the past together moment by moment, they struggle to understand how they managed to lose their daughter as well as their own identities. In this story about living in every moment, Octavio Solis' characters take us on a turbulent journey that examines what it means to defy expectations and to become better than fate and circumstance have determined we should be. The play was originally commissioned and workshopped by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Kent Thompson, Artistic Director.

ABOUT Octavio Solis
Author of over 20 plays, Octavio Solis is considered by many to be one of the most prominent Latino playwrights in America. With works that both draw on and transcend the Mexican-American experience, he is a writer and director whose style defies formula, examining the darkness, magic and humor of humanity with brutal honesty and characteristic intensity. His imaginative and ever-evolving work continues to cross cultural and aesthetic boundaries, solidifying him as one of the great playwrights of our time.

ABOUT THE CONTINUED LIFE OF NEW PLAYS FUND
NNPN's flagship program, the Continued Life of New Plays Fund supports three or more theaters which choose to mount the same new play within a twelve-month period. The result is a Rolling World Premiere through which the playwright develops a new work with multiple creative teams, for multiple communities of patrons, ensuring the resulting play is of the highest possible quality. And with a minimum of three productions in a single year, the play attains the momentum it needs to join the repertoire of frequently-produced new American works. NNPN provides grants of $7,000 to the first three participating theaters in each Rolling World Premiere; to date, NNPN has championed the continued life of 33 new plays in over 100 productions, with over a quarter-million dollars in grants.

ABOUT MAGIC THEATRE
Magic Theatre seeks to give voice to emerging and established playwrights and to develop and promote the work of theatre artists. Since its founding in 1967, Magic has premiered over 200 new works and engaged audiences with intimate, professional productions that speak to contemporary issues with originality and wit, as well as a sense of urgency and adventure.

ABOUT KITCHEN DOG THEATER
Founded in 1990, Kitchen Dog Theatre provides a place where questions of justice, morality, and human freedom can be explored. They choose plays that challenge our moral and social consciences, and invite audiences to be provoked, challenged, and amazed. They believe that the theater is a site of individual discovery as well as a force against conventional views of the self and experience. It is not a provider of answers, but an invitation to question. Since theater of this kind is not bound by any tradition, Kitchen Dog Theater is committed to exploring these questions whether they are found in the classics, contemporary works, or new plays.

ABOUT THE THEATRE @ BOSTON COURT
With a passion for new plays, The Theatre @ Boston Court has produced twenty-two world premieres in its ten-year history. The Theatre @ Boston Court finds inspiration in passionate, artist-driven theatre that challenges both artists and audiences with a focus on plays which are inherently theatrical, textually rich, and visually arresting.
