When they built the RMS Titanic in 1912, it made history. The largest floating object in the world (at the time) they said was unsinkable, but it was. Thousands lost their lives in the icy North Atlantic. But the memory of those lost and tributes to those who survived have captured the hearts and minds of mankind the world over. It has been the subject of countless books, research studies, films (including the Oscar-winning film, Titanic, the biggest grossing film in history) and documentaries. And no less than 3 musicals feature that fateful night as part of their stories. The Unsinkable Molly Brown, forever paying tribute to the feisty survivor by the same name, and Hello, Again, the musical that features a cruel twist of fate suffered by lovers aboard the ship. But the Broadway musical, Titanic, made history on its own. Skeptics wrote the show off before it even opened. It made headlines when it DIDN'T sink at the very first public performance! Then, it defied the odds and won 5 Tony Awards, including the coveted Best Musical prize, and one each for its thoughtful book (by Peter Stone) and for its gorgeous score (music and lyrics by Maury Yeston). From there, legions of fans flocked to the Box Office, including Rosie O'Donnell, who featured the opening number several times on her talk show.
Now Titanic is making local history as the first production to be done in the round! They said it couldn't be done with A Chorus Line! No way could it happen with Sunday in the Park with George! And both times, Toby's Dinner Theatre of Columbia proved them wrong! And now Toby, her top of the line design team, and her cast of 25 invite you to see first hand that Titanic: The Musical can soar no matter where it sails! Now in previews, Titanic: The Musical officially opens September 8th.
