Rep Stage, the regional theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC), continues its 22nd season with Samuel D. Hunter's 'The Whale', directed by Helen Hayes award winner and Rep Stage veteran Kasi Campbell. Since the death of his partner, a morbidly obese man confines himself to his small apartment on the outskirts of Mormon Country, eating himself into oblivion.

Director Amber Jackson has assembled a brilliant cast, creating an anarchic and, yes, surreal atmosphere in which anything and everything can happen. Zachary Fernebok's performance of Dali is priceless, and Jos. B. Musumeci Jr.'s set is a perfect evocation of the surreal atmosphere of Obolensky's play.

As a world premiere, there are pieces from which to build.

KWAIDAN (Japanese for 'ghost stories'), Spooky Action Theater's current production, is a must-see, although it is impossible to describe this mood piece. The performance plays mind-games with the attendees, making them feel like they are surrounded by spirits.

An extraordinary crocodile that can tap dance, perform household chores, and rescue cats from burning buildings will star in the musical Lyle the Crocodile at Imagination Stage. Directed by Kathryn Chase Bryer and adapted by humorist Kevin Kling, this production featuring music by Richard Gray is wonderfully warm and witty and will win the hearts of young people this holiday season. Winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize and the 2004 Tony Award, "I Am My Own Wife" was inspired by interviews conducted over several years by the playwright with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who survived both the Nazi and repressive East German Communist regimes. Michael Stebbins stars as Charlotte and more than 40 other characters that represent the men and women in Charlotte's life in Germany from the 1930s through 1990, when the Berlin Wall fell. "I Am My Own Wife" has been hailed by The New York Times as '. . . both moving and intellectually absorbing' and praised by The Associated Press as ". . . more than a historical document . . . the play is a vivid portrait of a unique person whose ability to endure has been turned into a highly theatrical journey.' Rep Stage veteran Tony Tsendeas returns to direct. "I Am My Own Wife" opens October 30, 2013, with a limited run through November 17 in theStudio Theatre of the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA) on the campus of HCC. The production will now run from November 6th through December 8th. Casting has been announced for The Hub Theatre's summer production of JORDAN HARRISON's gender-bending comedy, ACT A LADY. The men of a small 1920's Mid Western town have decided to put on a 'real fancy dress up' play in full drag. The cast is led by a trio of amazing actresses - Helen Hayes nominated actress TONI RAE SALMI as Dorothy, the no nonsense, accordion playing head of her household; Helen Hayes Award Winner and Hub veteran JENNA SOKOLOWSKI as Lorna, the object of men's affections and expert makeup artist; andNORA ACHRATI as Zina, the passionate and powerful theatre director accompanies her 'from the continent.'

The production is definitely high-energy fun for the youngest of theatregoers.

Flying V Theatre, which we last saw with their loose and loopy 'Pirate Laureate of Port Town,' has created an unforgettable evening of theatre that touches you in more ways than you imagined possible. The standing ovation I witnessed last weekend was well deserved, and I hope is just one of many for the run of this show.
